WHAT YOU WILL LEARN during Michael's workshop:
We will start with basic rules we almost always use: rules of portrait construction, color mixing principles for portraits and figures, background usage, and composition rules. We will learn to create expressive and emotional portraits using simple techniques and a minimal set of colors. We will use image construction step by step and layer by layer, utilizing both "dry brush" technique and soft washes.

MATERIALS NEEDED:
Paper: If you have any preferred brand of watercolor paper, feel free to use it. Hot-pressed paper is NOT recommended.
Rough Paper (Torchon Grain) 100% cotton, 300 gsm - Baohong Master's Choice, Saunders, or Arches, ranging from 28 x 38 cm to 38 x 56 cm, depending on your preferences.
My recommendation: Saunders Waterford Rough 300 gsm.

Brushes: Round squirrel, goat, or equivalent brush (about No. 12) Round pointed (or liner) brush (about No. 4) Sturdy flat watercolor brush, approximately 3.5 cm wide or larger. If you have a preferred brush set, feel free to use it. Asian calligraphy brushes are welcome (goat, squirrel, etc.).

Colors: I highly recommend Daniel Smith watercolors in tubes. If unavailable, you can use any other professional brand. Small travel sets are NOT recommended. We need a basic color set.
It is highly recommended to have the following set (we will use it extensively):
Quinacridone Sienna
Quinacridone Deep Gold
Alizarin Crimson
Perylene Violet
Indigo
Cobalt Blue
Phthalo Green BS
Phthalo Blue GS

You will also need masking tape, a board to stretch the paper, pencil, eraser, and blotting paper.

Registration requires membership. To join, contact us.
